The Week In Review (21/10 - 27/10)
During the past week, Google had gotten into the skin of a bunch of A-list bloggers and business folks at big-name news sites by dropping their PageRank. This weekly review roundup will thus focus on the negative buzz generated.
- With no official statement from Google explaining its intent and actions, this had even the best search engine optimizers dumbfounded in attempting to determine an explanation for the penalties handed out. For the sake of discussion only, Yaro of Entrepreneur Journey had thought up a few possible explanations that could possibly be the cause for the recent PageRank sweep hitting the blogosphere and beyond.
- John Chow was first to find his blog in the Google penalty box a few months back when he no longer rank page one for his own name! For this latest round, his blog wasn’t spared the Google iron fist. John is a master of turning a Negative into a Positive and a man in control of his blog’s destiny. He didn’t bend backward and allow Google to dictate terms but instead, turned adversity into an opportunity to propel his blog to greater heights. This is as good a time as any to remind everyone that if you live by the Google, you’ll die by the Google. John does not depend on Google for his blog’s traffic and neither should you.
- When face with the big G, how many of us can emulate John Chow and run the risk of incurring the wrath of Google when most of our traffic and blog revenue depended on it? Phil of Contest Blogger and Romance Tracker has been making some nice money every month with Adsense and had pretty decent amount of daily traffic from Google. Hence, it is in his best interests not to tick off Google and lose his traffic or get his Adsense account banned. As such, he is giving up hundreds of bucks a month - happily - by removing Text Link Ads from Romance Tracker (before the Google bot catch up with him) and won’t be using the service on Contest Blogger in the future. His is a classic example of “Live by the Google, Die by the Google“.
- Maki at DoshDosh want everybody to stop talking about the PageRank fiasco because the less we talk about it, the less buzz is generated, and the less limelight and power this action will have. Google PageRank is just a Webmaster fetish and it shouldn’t matter at all. If your site rank for key search terms that are relevant to advertisers, that’s all that matters, who cares what Google thinks about content or site quality?
- Renowned for calling a spade a spade and not one to mince her words when it matters, Kumiko of CashQuests dot com actually finds all these call-to-arms talk of how “we should really stop caring about PageRank” a bit fake and wonders aloud if those bloggers would still have reached these conclusions if their PageRank had actually increased! She even went on to divulge a little secret you won’t find written anywhere else, about why you should still care about PageRank.
With all the Google bitch slapping spree going on, leading to the PageRank update which is currently in progress, this is indeed turning out to be an outrageous October! All these dramas provide a good lead up to Halloween, speaking of which, here’s a video which will guarantee you edge-of-the-seat-nail-biting moments and scare the hell out of you. Enjoy!
