Every Grain Counts!

OK, so I didn’t go running around photo shoot sessions and playing the fame game. But I was spending much time playing an online game, one that helps improve my vocabulary and at the same time help reduce world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free! I’m referring to the online vocab game over at FreeRice dot com. For each word players get right, FreeRice donate 20 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Prgram to help reduce world hunger. Yes, isn’t that a noble cause? I’ve since “donated” tens of thousands grains of rice.

Who pays for the donated rice?

The rice is paid for by the advertisers whose names you see on the bottom of your vocabulary screen. This is regular advertising for these companies, but it is also something more. Through their advertising at FreeRice, these companies support both learning (free vocabulary for everyone) and reducing hunger (free rice for the hungry).

The rice is distributed by the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), the world’s largest food aid agency, working with over 1,000 other organizations in over 75 countries. See where the rice goes to.

Before I end this post with a video about FreeRice, I urge you to go over to Free Rice and make your contributions to help reduce world hunger. Spread the words to your families and friends. Remember, no amount is too small, every grain counts!

Super Sunday Tipoffs #3

The ULTIMATE tip-off I want to share with you this week is about my “new found fame“. Everyone’s welcome to busk in the limelight with me. While you are doing it, check out the buzz in comment section and see my fans’ reactions!

  • I believe most of you know about Twitter, the micro blogging and social networking service which allows you to publish short messages of less than 140 characters through different mediums like IM, cellphones and the web. I’ve hold back in getting an account since its launch in 2006 as I was catching up with macro blogging. I’ve finally signed up with Twitter after reading Maki’s experience in his 17 Ways You Can Use Twitter post. You can follow me on Twitter here and send me a message to say hi!
  • Those of you planning to start a blog but don’t know whether you should start with a subdomain at Blogger or get your blog self-hosted with Wordpress should read up on OpTempo which did a cost-benefit analysis between blogging host Wordpress and Blogger. Personally, I have experienced blogging on both these platforms as I started out with a blogspot blog and move over to this self-hosted Wordpress blog. In my opinion, both platforms have their strengths/weaknesses and each is suited to blogger at different stages of their blogging endeavor.
  • If you still can’t make up your mind which blog platform to go with after the above Wordpress vs Blogger face-off, you may want to check out LGR Webmaster Blog which made a comparison between Joomla and Wordpress. If you are planning on creating a new website or blog, make sure you choose the right tool for the job.

Featured At MagMyPic

I have a confession to make. The reason for my lack of posting for the whole of last week was due to the various photo shoot sessions with some of the world’s top photographers shooting me for some of the world’s top magazines.

No seriously, the above pranks were just a load of fun made possible by MagMyPic. MagMyPic.com allows you to upload your photos to create your own fake magazine covers! MagMyPic.com is an affiliate marketing effort that works to distribute and market subscriptions to each of the magazines displayed on MMP while providing a fun and entertaining way for users to display their picture.

Give your pics a shot at the limelights, go have some fun at MagMyPic!

Put A Contract Out On Yourself

I’m sure many of us have set our New Year’s resolutions and/or blogging goals but have you thought of how to see them through so that those resolutions do not turn into wishful thinking. Don’t set resolutions or goals for the sake of setting them without having a firm commitment to fulfil them, no proper method to track your progress and no planned periodic review of where you stand.

It’s three weeks into the new year—so the question is, how are those resolutions coming along? If you are having a tough time sticking to those resolutions, be it to lose weight, quit smoking, exercise regularly, then help is on hand in the form of a free web-based tool called stickK.

Super Sunday Tipoffs #2

Oh gosh! I haven’t posted for an entire week! This is like a cardinal sin of blogging! I was thrown off track when this blog suffered an outage and couldn’t pick up the blogging momentum fully ever since. Should I be paranoid and add more pressure on myself? I thought I was on the road to recovery, and now I need to shake off this lethargy fast!

The week zoomed by without any post being published and I apologize for this lack of actions. On a more positive note, the blogosphere is charging at full steam, churning out fine quality content as always. I kept myself in the loop by doing a lot of blog reading, networking, participating in the conversations and bringing you the latest tip-offs to interesting posts around the web.

  • Every so often we come across blog posts about writing tips and while writing is an important element of blogging, is there more to blogging than just writing? Rocai of Bloggingmix shared his thoughts on how “Blogging Is Not Always About Writing” and how the benefits of reading can aid in our blogging endeavor. In the post, he also offered a few useful reading tips. After reading his post, I felt much better about my lack of posting this past week and the time I spent reading tons of blog could turn out to be a blessing in disguise.
  • I have got to break out from this stupor, shake off the lethargy and get into the blogging groove once again. From Tay’s Super Blogging Tips, I’ve got lots to learn to be a Successful Long Term Blogger. Could I be suffering from just a common ailment of writer’s block or has the stress of nearly losing it all led to a more serious blogger burnout for me? I’m not done with this blog yet and will not let the seeds of doubts get planted in my mind. Quitting is not an option for me, and I will emerge stronger than ever from this phase.
  • If you are planning to purchase some domain names to start your new blog or add on to your existing portfolios, you may want to read up some Tips on How To Buy a Domain Name, posted on Blogging Cents. Lori offered some simple yet effective tips and also shared her personal experience which is a good lesson for us to learn from.
  • The buzz from the tech world this past week is without a doubt the introduction of MacBook Air. Measuring just 0.76” at its “thickest” and tapering off at 0.16”, the world’s thinnest notebook is ultra thin, ultra portable and will no doubt put every Mac lovers on cloud 9. If you have missed out on Steve Job’s 90 minutes keynote speech at MacWorld 2008, the below video will put you up to speed in 60 seconds!

Gone In 60 seconds! Don’t Blink!

Look what this “Thinnovation” from MacBook Air did to its “fatter” cousins.
