The Spaniards took the bull by the horns and converted their jinx to jubilation, with a 4-2 quarter-final penalty shoot-out victory over Italy, finally laying the ghost of 22 June to rest. The hero of the night was goalkeeper Casillas, who saved two spot-kicks to set up Fabregas to convert the winning penalty.
Before this, Spain have been forced into a penalty shoot-out on 22 June in quarter-finals at major tournament and their nerves had failed them on those occassions.
Those three painful penalty losses:
- To Belgium at the 1986 World Cup;
- To South Korea at the 2002 World Cup.
In the end, Spain progress into the semis against exciting Russia. They will have the chance to lay to rest another ghost as Russia’s coach Guss Hiddink was in charge of South Korea, the team that did them in at the 2002 World Cup.

The Russians are coming! Guided by man-motivator and master tactician extraordinaire Guus Hiddink, the Russians over-ran favorites Holland with their superior fitness to win 3-1 in extra-time and powered them into the semis.

Russia’s Dutch coach Guus Hiddink risks being public enemy number one in his homeland after pulling off his latest masterstroke to eliminate the team who were tournament favorites after emphatic wins over continental heavyweights Italy and France in the ‘Group of Death’.
The result is the third time in as many quarter-finals the pool winner has been knocked out by the team finishing second in their respective group following Portugal’s defeat to Germany and Croatia’s elimination at the hands of Turkey.
The disappointing defeat will be the swansong for Edwin Van der Sar’s Oranje career, and also coach Marco Van Basten who incidentally was the player who scored what was deemed as the best goal ever in the 1988 European Championship Finals when the Dutch won against the former Soviet Union.

With the greatest respect to women, football is the most beautiful thing in the world – Salven Bilic (Croatia)
In the game of bowling, the term turkey is used when a player makes three strikes in a row. In Euro 2008, Turkey is the undisputed comeback kings after they destroyed Croatian’s resolve with their never-say-die attitude for their straight third come-from-behind victory.
The tense match had ended scoreless after 90 minutes of regulation time. Turkey ended Croatia’s dream of a first European Champions semi-finals in heartbreaking fashion after equalizing with practically the last kick in extra-time period and winning 3-1 in penalty kicks!
After the penalties catastrophe, many Croatia players simply crashed down heavily on the turf and wailed their hearts out, their spirits broken. Didn’t anyone told the Croatian boys to Expect Emotions?

The newspaper headline said it all isn’t it? Portugal were outplayed, out-muscled, out-gunned and out-witted by the super efficient Germans. Portugal is OUT of Euro 2008 after losing 2-3 to a German outfit missing key defensive midfielder Torsten Frings and suspended coach Joachim Loew, who watched the match in a viewing box up in the stands.
Despite being tagged as pre-tournament favorites and widely tip to win Euro 2008, Germany had not been living up to expectations coming into this game. In fact the Germans were written off by fans and football pundits and their backs were up against the wall. But when push come to shove, the Germans proved their mettle and showed the world what they are made of.
My money was on Portugal to win the Championship, and now that the proud Portugese peacock had their feathers plucked and sent packing home, I need to find another team to support. Germany, anyone?
