The Week In Review (09/12 - 15/12)
Another week had past us by and we are another week closer to Christmas. Many of you must have been busy drawing up that wishlist or thinking what gift to give to whom, and also running around getting all those shopping done in time. I doubt you had time to cruise around the blogosphere as you normally would, so here I am, bringing you another edition of the best finds of the past week.
- Just how many of us aspiring pro blogger wannabe can earn a living online by blogging full-time? The reality is, most of us have a day job, family to take care of, children to worry about and a thousand other things running through our minds each day. At the end of a workday, when we finally find an extra hour and plonk ourselves down in front of the computer to churn out some great content, all we see is blinking cursor after blinking cursor. Does this scenario sound familiar to you? Our life’s distractions can be quite a hurdle to overcome but luckily, How2Blogger posted some tips on how to overcome blogger’s block. There are some good advices and they should come in handy when the dreaded B monster hits you.
- After you have overcome the lethargy of blogger’s block, you still have the challenging task of thinking up what to write about. While it is true the more you write the better you get at it, you can still sit at the computer one day absolutely blank. It is something that impacts all of us at one time or another. When that happens it is good to have some strategies for generating new blog topic ideas and fast. Chris Garrett of Chrisg dot com showed us some quick fix on how to generate post idea when you are stuck. Unfreezing the gray cells is half the battle, once you get some traction you can build momentum and have the finished piece written in no time.
- I bet you have come across lengthy blog posts with paragraphs after paragraphs of words that will likely put the readers to sleep. Using images to enhance your content is a surefire way to attract readers’ attention as well as prolong their attention span which is shorten by thousands of other worthy things to do online. Images add splashes of color all over your site, and it makes the view interesting for your readers. Over at Super Blogging Tips, Tay showed us how to find and use amazing photos from Flickr. Once you get the hang of it, you can take your site from drab to stunning just by adding one Flickr photo to the top of each of your posts.
- From the topic of photos, let us now talk about video. To be specific, I want to show you a video ad, which embodies perfection, perseverance, poetry in motion and the triumph of the human spirit, all captured in Guinness Tipping Point Domino advertisement.
I came across this fantastic video over at my good friend, Deborah’s blog - Life In The Fast Lane. Check out in-depth details of The Domino Effect and many other interesting topics, all painstakingly researched and thought-provokingly written. I promise you there won’t be one dull moment.
- Many of us knew about the famed Googleplex at Mountain View campus and how its workplace resembles one huge playground rather than a traditional office. Have you ever wonder how other leading Internet companies measure up to Googleplex? Charl Norman of BandWidth Blog posted a list featuring the offices of today’s leading Internet companies.
My favourite kind of office environment is that of LinkedIn, which is open-concept yet offers personal space and certain degree of privacy for individual employee.

The office of Tocquigny come across as too much like a furniture showroom, with its impeccable display of modern furnishings.

Great selection! We all need help with ideas for upcoming blog posts.
Hopefully I wont need to refer to these post too often, but it’s good to know they are there when I need them.
Thanks Brett. Yes, we could use some help every once in a while.
I’ll have to check out your links for advice on the ‘dreaded B’, I think we all get hit by it at some point and time.
I think I prefer the look of the Tocquigny office since it doesn’t have the typical office feel to it, although I’ve never been a huge fan of ultr-modern. But the clean, simple and understated atmosphere is very interesting.
The Guinness ad is an amazing clip to watch. To quote, “The ad took a week to film, with some sequences having to be reshot up to 15 times. Setting the dominoes on the table at the start of the ad took a team of 3 experts 2 days, but took merely 14 seconds to topple.”
Thanks so much for the plug and kind words!
Thanks for the plug!
And I’ve been looking for that article on the flickr images - I came across it, but forgot to bookmark it and couldn’t find it again. But here it is!
Speaking about coincidence!
It’s amazing how sometimes we tried so hard to find something unsuccessfully, but when we stop looking for it, it appear in front of us!
Talk about a futuristic workplace…:)
